Eleanor Kendra James, winner of the $1,000.00 Howard Engelman Music Award, performed the Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, Andante comodo, Mov. 1, by W. Walton (1962 Version). Hannah Swayze performed the Horn Concerto Op. 11, Allegro, by R. Strauss. Julie Oh performed Chaminade’s Flute Concertino Op. 107. Sheng Zhang performed the Cello Concerto Op. 104, Allego, Mov. 1, by Dvorak. Rachael Huang performed Chopin’s Piano Concerto in E Minor Op. 11, Allego maestoso, Mov. 1. Alize Rozsnyai sang The Doll Song by J. Offenbach and Zerbinetta’s Aria (from Ariadne auf Naxos) by R. Strauss. Sue Anne Cho performed Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Vivace, Mov. 1.

Our assistant conductor, Cary Belling, conducted violinist Armen Anassian in his performance of the J.S. Bach Concerto for Violin and String Orchestra in D Minor BWV 105. Brad Cohen, our First Clarinestist who also regularly performs with the Beach Cities and Rio-Hondo Symphonies, played the Clarinet Concerto in A Major by Mozart. Michael Masters, who has toured worldwide, performed the Violoncello Concerto in B Minor by Dvorak. Soprano Bonnie Bowden, who has graced stages across the globe for over 25 years, sang 
Schubert's Ave Maria and Puccini's O mio babbino caro "Gianni Schicchi."

Guest conductor, Dr. H. Vincent Mitzelfelt, founder of The Camarata of Los Angeles, 
conducted the Faure Requiem and operatic arias by Gluck and Mozart. In addition he will conducted Color Me Equal by Alvin Mills and My Prayer for World Peace with lyrics by Phyllis Diller and music by Alvin Mills. Soloists from The Camarta included Coril Prochnow, Eugene Carbajal, Marcela Pan, Charlene Capetillo, Eric Castro, Timothy J. Gonzales, Allison Coop and Connie Washburn. Ildy Lee also sang the world premier of the Lee/Mills collaboration Budapest. 

May 17, 2009 - Artists of Tomorrow Concert

Clarissa Shan, winner of the $1,000.00 Howard Engelman Music Award, sang Handel's Da tempeste (Giulio Cesare) and Donizetti's Quel guardo il cavliere (Don Pasquale).  Kara Gieseking (Jr. Winds) performed Chaminade's Concerto Op. 107.  Dana Jackson (Sr. Winds) performed Mozart's Bassoon Concerto Mv 1. Gloria Yen (Jr. Piano) performed Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3; Op 26. Linda Edsinga (Sr. Piano) performed Liszt's Totentanz. Sofia Kim (Jr. Strings) perfomed Ravel's Tajgare. Solomon Liang (Sr. Strings) Sibelius's Violin Concerto in D / Mv 1.

Rachel H. Chung (pianist), Deborah Kim (violinist), Stan Sharp (Cellist) performed the Triple Concerto for Piano, Violin and Cello by Beethoven, in C Major, Op. 56. Also on the program was Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G minor.

Maestro Alvin Mills shared the podium with the great conductor, Dr. H. Vincent Mitzelfelt, who founded The Camerata of Los Angeles in 1973. He conducted compositions by Mozart, Wagner, Bizet and the Lefcourt-Mills' Color Me Equal. Wayne Sheppard, Bass-Baritone was his soloist. Maestro Mills conducted Christmas and Hanakkah music.

Sylvie Ollivier, pianist who has given benefit concerts for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra on behalf of the Santa Monica Westside Philharmonic Committee, performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. Richard Kaufman, Principal Pops Conductor with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Orange County's Pacific Symphony, shared the podium with Maestro Alvin Mills. Maestro Kaufman conducted American music. Composers Aaron Copland, George M. Cohan and John Philip Sousa were featured.

Artists of Tomorrow Concert

Leah Hansen, winner of the $1,000.00 Howard Engelman Music Award, performed the first movement of the Lalo Cello Concert. Joesph Tsai, winner of the $500 Matthew Klopfleisch Music Award played the first movement of Saint-Saen's Piano Concerto in G Minor. Austin Hansen, winner of the $250 Richard Marcus Music Award played the first movement of Samuel Barber's Violin Concert. Yul Kim performed the first movement of Handel's Harp Concerto. Zachary Wetzel sang "Se Vuol Ballare," from Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," and "Warm as the Summer Night," from Douglas Moore's Opera, Ballad of "Baby Doe." Gina Choi will performed the first movement of Mozart's flute concerto in D Major. Leigh Gaines will played Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 (movement one).

Richard Kaufman, Principal Pops Conductor with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Orange County’s Pacific Symphony, will share the podium with Maestro Alvin Mills. Richard Kaufman also conducts the Chicago Symphony Concert Series, the Florida Orchestra and many others throughout the United States. Maestro Kaufman will conduct music by Leroy Anderson, honoring the One Hundredth Anniversary of his birth. Nelson Kole, a musician of great diversity as pianist, composer, songwriter/singer, arranger, will share the program with Maestro Kaufman, Mr. Kole will play the ’Leroy Anderson Piano Concerto.’ Also on the program is fourteen year old pianist, Rachel Hyojae Chung, who began playing at age four and by eight, performed the Haydn Concerto in D Major at Zipper Hall. She is currently studying with noted pedagogue Mme. Mihaung Keel. Rachel has won numerous prizes from competitions: Los Angeles Korea Times Piano Competition; Puigcerda International Piano Competition in Spain, among others, and she was one of the winners of the Brentwood-Westwood Artists of Tomorrow competition. Rachel H. Chung will perform the Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16 by Grieg.

On the program will be sixteen year old violinist, Doori Na, student of Robert Lipsett of the Colburn school and the world renown Itzhak Perlman, will perform ’Violin Concerto in E minor’ by Conus; and a World Premiere of the ’Celebration of World Peace (A Miracle)’ by Debussy-Mills. Soprano Melissa Simpson will perform several Arias and then lead the audience in a Holiday Music Sing-a-Long. This afternoon is dedicated to the memory of our founding President, Howard Engelman.

Leslie Lashinsky, Bassoonist who toured the world with Zubin Mehta, Leonard Bernstein and Esa-Pekka-Salonen, will perform the 'Andante and Hungarian Rondo,'   Op. 35, by Carl Maria von Weber; and Jon Titmus, Principal Horn with the Brentwood-Westwood Symphony, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Los Angeles Opera and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra among others will play the 'Horn Concerto No. 4 in E-flat Major' by Mozart.   Maestro Alvin Mills will conduct 'Sheherazade' by Rimsky-Korsakov. This program is dedicated to Stanley Lefcourt whose devotion and dedication to our community will always be remembered.
